They create hydraulic separation between the heat pump and hydronic circuits, ensure optimal water flow through the heat exchanger, prevent inefficient short-cycling and aid the defrost cycle in freezing conditions. These buffer tanks are designed to be installed inside or outside with weather protection. Buffer tanks listed with an internal cooper coil are designed to receive heat from a supplementary source including wood boiler, fireplace wetback, etc. The larger tanks are better suited to large heat pumps and/or for additional thermal energy storage such as with off-grid applications.
